Supporting the University's Educational Mission
The Campus Master Plan supports the University’s mission of learning, discovery and engagement and optimizes its function as a rich and diverse learning environment. The quality of the campus environment, including buildings and academic space, contributes significantly to the University's ongoing efforts to attract and sustain the best students, faculty, and staff. The preparation of
this plan included over a year of interviews and meetings with
University leaders, college and major unit heads, and central administration to determine their academic needs now and for the future. Out of those meetings grew a plan for accommodating growth.
Current Growth
Currently there are about 535,000 gross square feet (GSF) of new projects in the planning phase including the State Hygienic Laboratory, Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, College of Public Health building, Library Storage Facility, and Seashore Hall. Growth is consistent with an average rate of about 250,000 GSF of new space per year.
Infill
It is recommended that an infill strategy be adopted to optimize the use of campus land. It is evident that there is a need to determine appropriate locations for additional new building space as the University continues to expand in the coming decades. New buildings and facilities should be planned at densities that will optimize the use of available land and maintain flexibility. Low-density development within highly desired building areas of the campus should be avoided.
Future significant infill opportunities are identified for the East and West campuses that amount to approximately 4.25 million gross square feet of additional capacity.
Future Building Need
1.5 to 1.8 million square feet is a general estimate of the amount of new building that will likely need to be accommodated on the campus in the future. There is additional building capacity at the following locations:
Old Capitol District1,813,000 GSF Iowa Center for the Arts District977,000 GSF Boyd Law District610,000 GSF Health Sciences and UIHC District838,000 GSF Athletics and Recreation District775,000 GSF East and West Residential District30,000 GSF Total 5,043,000 GSFLocations for new facilities include the Seashore Hall block, the river site south of the English-Philosophy Building, the Health Sciences Campus, the International Center site, and the area south of Burlington Street that will host the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The plan also recommends that University services- and operations-related facilities begin a phased relocation to areas south of their existing locations along Burlington and Court Streets.
